I find the faces of people fascinating. Every face tells me a story, or at best, reveals a story waiting to be told. Behind the eyes of every human being is a cry for attention, belonging, acceptance and acknowledgement. Our planet is home to approximately 7 billion people. What I find staggering is the diversity in culture and in the way we all look so different.
My new project for 2014 is to capture that diversity in black and white.
Why "Black & White"? Simple, because it is a multi-cultural planet and in the words of the great Bruce Lee, "under the stars, we are all one family".
This project was inspired by a number of factors; my trip to the far east exposed me to a race of people so different from my own. I had met Chinese people in the UK and USA, however, not like this; on their turf, within their context, environment and culture. No, this was the most dynamic culture shock and experience I have ever had. The last time I experienced anything closely similar was on my first trip to South Africa.
The other tipping point for me was meeting a lady in the park one Sunday afternoon, who had the most extra-ordinary face I had ever seen. Her face and "being" blew me awayand it struck me how the notion of how we look and how we are as people work hand in hand to create a complete character and personality that relates to the world.
I began to look deeper into the possibility that our faces can reveal much more than we try to let on or cover up with words. Our "being" is our true identity and the truth of how we experience life in the moment, "the now", "the present".
The faces I have captured appear on this website with the full permission and cooperation of all the people I have met on my travels and I offer them my heart felt thanks for their willingness to participate in this expression of our humanness and humanity.
