I have become very passionate about shooting portraits of people on the streets. This has become a really big breakthrough in my self-expression and confidence in initiating conversations with complete strangers.
Today was simply extra-ordinary; this morning, the weather was simply wonderful so I left home early to attend to some errands after which I stopped off at my local coffee shop Cafe Roma.
In the image above, you can see lady approaching. Well, she came up to me as I was sat outside enjoying my coffee and said, "may I share your table?" to which I replied, "that would be lovely, make yourself comfortable". She disappeared inside the Coffee shop to place her order, when she returned, she took a seat directly opposite me. I delibratley waited to see what would happen next...nothing happened, no eye contact, no conversation.
If there is one thing I have learned in life that has been of immense value to me in my social interaction, it is having the balls to go first, man up and initiate contact, to which I did by saying, "how is your morning going?"
This simple question opened up a lovely connection and conversation with a most charming lady called Christine. I discovered that we shared similar views on life, spirituality and human evolution. This connection was perfect and didn't need anything else, it was complete unto itself. However, being who I am and my fulfilling on my intention in life to capture our humanity in the moment, I asked Christine if I could take her Portrait as part of building my portfolio, she said "yes".
The Portrait was the icing on the cake, the interaction was the magic, the rapport and connection created the possibility of trust and empathy. There was nothing in the way, we become at one with each other. I am learning that photography is much more than just taking pictures, it is about using the camera to reveal the truth, the authentic truth in the decisive moment.
A big thank you to Christine.
